        - The Staff

Mission Statement
The United Methodist Preschool is a ministry of the United Methodist Church. Through a cooperative relationship with parents, staff members, church members and the community, the preschool is committed to providing a supportive, enriching and stimulating environment in which the preschool age child can experience physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual growth at his/her own developmental pace.

Philosophy
We are an educational and spiritual outreach of the United Methodist Church of Glendora. We provide an interactive and educational opportunity by offering a program of vigorous play, quiet creative activities. and the chance to know, accept and establish relationships with others. We extend the child’s world beyond his/her family and neighborhood and promote parent education. We introduce your child to simple stories of the life and teachings of Jesus.

Registration/Tuition
A non-refundable registration fee is due at time of enrollment. Registration priority is given to returning students, siblings and church members. The preschool maintains a wait list for other students who would like to attend. Tuition payments are due by the first of each month and a late charge will apply if tuition remains unpaid after the fifth business day. A discount on tuition will be applied toward siblings.

Holidays
Generally, the preschool is closed all day on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, President’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Tuition is not reduced during holiday closures.

Staff
The United Methodist Preschool has qualified, experienced teachers who are dedicated, nurturing, and understand the developmental needs of each child. Our teachers are excited to take an active role in your child’s development.

Curriculum
United Methodist Preschool curriculum is designed to meet the needs of each child’s developmental potential by introducing, reinforcing and reviewing behaviors, skills and concepts.

As part of our curriculum, your child will be introduced to a variety of creative activities, which will build on his/her existing experiences. Field trips and weekly chapel are a part of the curriculum. Teacher-directed and child-directed activities focus on the developmental areas of your child’s growth. These activities are sometimes vigorous and messy. Please dress your child in comfortable play clothes with closed-toed, rubber-soled shoes. As a part of our classroom, we have learning centers where the children may come and go freely. These centers are designed to further enhance the curriculum and promote the various and changing developmental needs of each child. Outdoor play is an extension of the classroom and is included as one of the daily activities.

Sign In/Out Sheets & Emergency Forms
State regulations require that your child be signed in and out with a FULL signature daily. The sign-in sheet notebooks are located on the table outside the school office. Children’s names are in alphabetical order within their classroom’s book. Children will NOT be released to anyone who is not at least 18 years old and on the Emergency Form. If occasional emergencies and unexpected problems occur, call and inform the office. Photo ID will be required for those people picking up your child until they become familiar to us. Two adults other than parents must be listed on Emergency Information Forms.

Drop Off/Pick Up Times
Our schedule is designed to focus on morning as well as early afternoon learning. Please be mindful of your child’s routine and drop off and pick up accordingly. Late pick-up is strongly discouraged. In the event of late pick-up, a fee will be charged. To ease the traffic problems, the parking lot at the rear of the school should be entered from Wabash (east) and exited onto Vista Bonita (west).

Parent/School Communication
A newsletter is sent home monthly to keep you up to date on important events and activities. Keep the monthly calendar that your child’s teacher provides handy for reference. Preschool news can also be found included in The Signal, the church newsletter. Any suggestions, comments or observations concerning the preschool can be relayed to the director. Should the director be unavailable, you may leave a note in the director’s private cubby located in the church office.

Parent Conferences
Twice a year, in November and March, formal parent/teacher conferences will be scheduled. The conferences are designed to set goals and assess development of your child. These meetings also assist us in further identifying individual needs and skills of each child. Ongoing communication is encouraged throughout the year, so we can continue working together as a team for your child’s benefit.

Behavior
We feel a positive definition of acceptable and unacceptable behavior will encourage the achievement of self-discipline. We strive to assist your child to find positive ways to satisfy their needs for attention, communication, productiveness and challenges. Students whose behavior and conduct make it difficult to maintain a positive environment for learning will be subject to dismissal or denial of re-enrollment. The director and Governing Board will make such decisions after careful consideration, which may include conferences with parents, teacher and student.

Files
Files for each child are located at the sign-in/out table. Please check your child’s file daily for artwork and school communications that need to be sent home.

Cubbies
Each child has a cubby labeled with their name on it where their belongings and lunch must be kept. If your child stays for “lunch bunch,” all of his/her items will be gathered on the top of Room One’s cubbies. Please make sure to LABEL all items that come from home; including jackets and sweaters.

Nutrition
Breakfast (parent provides) can be served until 8:00 a.m. A nutritious snack (school provides) is served in the morning and afternoon. Lunches (parent provides) are to be labeled and have their own cooling source. Please notify the director and teacher of any food allergies your child may have.

Naps
Each child will need a pillow case, fitted crib sheet, nap blanket and small favorite stuffed “nap friend” clearly labeled with his/her name to use during naptime (12:30 – 2:30 p.m.). These items must be taken home at the end of each week to be laundered and returned at the beginning of each week.

Illness
We understand that it is difficult for a parent to leave or miss work, therefore it is suggested that alternative arrangements be made for occasions when a child must remain at home or be picked up due to illness.

Before bringing your child to school, please evaluate him/her for the following common “sickness” symptoms: rashes, fever over 100 degrees, loose bowel movement (two or more) and pink eye (mucus in the eye). The law states that we must conduct a daily health check to ensure that each child is well upon arrival.

We ask that if you know your child is sick, you do not bring him/her to school. Should your child become ill, he/she will be isolated in order to prevent contamination of other children and staff members. We will contact you (custodial parent first) to come pick him/her up immediately. If your child has been excluded for any of the above reasons, they must be SYMPTOM-FREE or on antibiotics for a full 24 hours before returning to school. Some symptoms/illnesses may need a doctor’s release permitting the child to return to school. If, for any reason, your child will not be attending school, please notify the preschool office at (626) 335-4622.

Medication
If your child needs medication, please bring all medication to the preschool office and complete an administration of medication form. (Please do not send medication in your child’s lunch or backpack). All medication must be in the original bottle/package with the child’s full name clearly labeled. Over-the-counter (nonprescription) medication can only be administered with a note from your child’s doctor stating your child’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage and times it is to be administered. Please label the bottle/package with your child’s full name. All asthma inhalers/nebulizers require completion of additional paperwork.

Emergency Kits
On the first day of school each student is required to bring a complete emergency kit and a change of clothes (outer pants, underwear, shirt and socks), which will be stored at the school. The emergency kit should contain a supply of food for 6 non-perishable snacks that fit in a zip lock bag. Suggested items include: single serving cans of fruit, tuna & crackers, peanut butter & crackers, and beef jerky. Remember, all canned food must have pull tab lids. We also suggest you include a small family picture and a small note in the bag. It can help your child feel less lonely during an emergency. We provide a solar blanket and drinking water for each child.

Accidents/Observations
All injuries will be reported on an accident report form. If it is a head or neck injury, a phone call will be made to the parent notifying them of the accident. If the injury appears to either be life-threatening or, in our judgment, requires immediate medical attention, “911” will be called. If a mark (scratch, etc.) is noticed on the child during the day which was not present when the child arrived at school, a note will be written and sent home.

Special Days
Each child will have a Special Day at school either on or near his/her birthday. On this day, the parent may provide (optional) a special treat or snack, napkins and/or 100% fruit juice for this event.

We celebrate a variety of different holidays. These holidays are celebrated in a different way with each teacher. Please check with your child’s teacher to find out how they will be celebrating.

We welcome any of our families to share their culture, traditions, holidays or special events with their child’s class. Please let the director and teacher know if you would be interested in sharing.
